FIRSTS Litter - Day 0

Today is D-Day. Or maybe W-Day. Per the ovulation chart, whelping should be occurring sometime today. Last night was a long night of staying awake with her just in case things got started in the dark. Let me tell you, coffee infused all-nighters should be left to the college students. While hoping Mars would get this party started a littler early, she and I spent the wee hours of the night binge watching Madame Secretary, reading up on our book by Dr. Greer, pacing, cleaning, trying to prop our eyes open, and all around finding the last bit of strength we had, both human and canine, to make it to daylight. Both of us were successful and Amanda took over at 7:30am, allowing me to get some “real” sleep. Which I’m thankful for because by that time, the Starbucks I had at 9pm had worn off.

This is Mendel (Mars’ father) on the right and Synnie (Mars’ sister and another Mendel daughter) on the left. Notice they both have their paws in the same places under them. Silly fuzzies.

Mars has increased the pacing a bit more and the self cleaning a lot. Her temp was approximately 99 degrees at approximately 1:00pm today. The mucus plug was discovered at 4:45pm this afternoon. It won’t be long now. She is making frequent trip to the bathroom, so the puppies have probably moved into a place that puts pressure on her bladder. She’s also wanting to be right on me. Dr. Greer’s book talks about the bitch wanting to sit on their owner’s lap when they start having the pushing contractions. This could be leading up to it? She’s just come inside from another potty break and has shown us she has loose stools. Thought I would never have to wipe my children’s butts again,  but here we are.
